Taoism teaches that there is one undivided truth at the root of all things. Then breathe into them and stretch them with variety of intensity. Using your internal intuition, make subtle adjustments as you search for tension. When you are really stress-free, the poses feel easier, and there will be a feeling of free-flowing unobstructed energy. This is where practice comes in!&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt; &lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Erich Schiffman: The word yoga, the way I think of it, means conscious union with the Infinite. It is not so much that you are re-yoking with the Infinite - you're already yoked with the Infinite - but pausing and feeling the energy that constitutes you and getting out of your head what you think you are supposed to do and giving yourself permission to do as the energy is wanting to do through you. That is how you evidence the inherent harmony of the oneness of the Infinite.  Keep being a student of the one and only teacher, the Infinity of God, and dare to do as your deepest feelings prompt you to do. The ab work was the best part for me - the exercises were unique and I really felt them working!  I have exercised since I was 15, and I could feel the ab work the next day! The concept standing leg exercises are sort of like the barre warm-up in a dance class, but these exercises are different from what you'd do in a dance class ……….. Definity is really creative toning exercises that you've never seen before.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;P.S. Right from the beginning, it kept my heart rate up without experiencing that hard-to-breathe feeling.  The use of repetitions,  weight and range of motion allow you to start at your fitness level and move up each time to constantly challenge yourself.  Additionally, the segmenting of working the right v. left sides and arms, legs and abs provide variety and a localized recovery period before the next set. Taoism teaches that there is one undivided truth at the root of all things. It literally means:&lt;br /&gt;tao (the way)&lt;br /&gt;te (strength/virtue)&lt;br /&gt;ching (scripture)&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;BECK TRANSLATION&lt;br /&gt;The Way that can be described is not the absolute Way;&lt;br /&gt;the name that can be given is not the absolute name.&lt;br /&gt;Nameless it is the source of heaven and earth; named it is the mother of all things.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Whoever is desireless, sees the essence of life.&lt;br /&gt;Whoever desires, sees its manifestations.&lt;br /&gt;These two are the same,but what is produced has names.&lt;br /&gt;They both may be called the cosmic mystery:&lt;br /&gt;from the cosmic to the mystical is the door to the essence of all life.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Practice allowing everything to be the way it is.&lt;br /&gt;Relax&lt;br /&gt;Let go&lt;br /&gt;Allow&lt;br /&gt;And recognize that some of your desires are about how you think your world should be rather than how it is in that moment&lt;br /&gt;Judge less and listen more&lt;br /&gt;Do not be a bully and try and force your own agenda.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Do you think you might have a person in your life who is a control freak, or do you fear you might bulldoze people into doing what you want, when you want it done?&lt;br /&gt;Dwight D Eisenhower sums up it up best with this quote&lt;br /&gt;Leadership is the art of getting someone else to do something you want done because he wants to do it.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Here are some things to ponder about control freaks.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;UK family celebrity life coach Suzy Greaves created this list of scenarios that are good indicators that you exhibit signs of being a control freak at home.&lt;br /&gt;1 Your child comes up with a great idea for a project at school. You say: 'That's great but I've got a better one!'&lt;br /&gt;--------------------------------------------------------------------------------&lt;br /&gt;2 If your partner disagrees with you, you get very annoyed and argue your point until you're blue in the face.&lt;br /&gt;--------------------------------------------------------------------------------&lt;br /&gt;3 Your favorite phrase is: 'You're doing it all wrong, give it to me!'&lt;br /&gt;--------------------------------------------------------------------------------&lt;br /&gt;4 For your annual holiday, you decide where you're going, book the flights, hotel and pack the bags.&lt;br /&gt;--------------------------------------------------------------------------------&lt;br /&gt;5 After a night out with your friends, you feel irritated. They were moaning on about the same things. I really like this quote from Dwight D Eisenhower: You don't lead by hitting people over the head-that's assault, not leadership.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Ron Lindeboom, Creativecow.net, wrote about doing business with controlling clients and here are a few signs of control freaks:&lt;br /&gt;What Are the Tell-Tale Signs of a Control Freak?&lt;br /&gt;It is fairly easy to spot a control freak in your business. They give off a long list of predictable signs that leave as indelible an impression as an alley cat scent marking its territory. Though there are many more signs that we won't cover here for the sake of brevity, some of these signs include:&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;They never seem to want to listen to you.&lt;br /&gt;They regularly and with no regard interrupt you in mid-sentence.&lt;br /&gt;Your ideas are not welcome, except when they agree 100% with those of the control freak.&lt;br /&gt;They call you at inopportune times and will not get off the phone, even when you tell them you have another client present.&lt;br /&gt;They will drop you like a rock if you correct them and are proven to be correct.&lt;br /&gt;They will drop you like a rock if you are better than them in their field of endeavor.&lt;br /&gt;They regularly complain that you are over charging them. (Never relent on this point and keep them on the clock or my only words to you are "Heaven help you.")&lt;br /&gt;They will spend hours (if you let them) drowning you in trivia and detail on ideas and systems that will have you wanting to pull out your hair and send you running screaming from the room.&lt;br /&gt;They will cheat you if they can get away with it and will always have brilliant reasonings and justifications as to why you deserve this.&lt;br /&gt;They will spend way more than they owe you to beat you in court. Remember: They are control freaks.&lt;br /&gt;Lastly, they know everything. Just ask them.&lt;br /&gt;This list is in no way comprehensive but you get the point.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Life is like a mirror. If you frown at it, it frowns back. There are signs to watch for when choosing a position. Please be reminded that you are going to spend 40 or 50 hours per week with your boss and co-workers. Why?&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;1. Control freaks control their thoughts. This means they know what they want and can focus on their goals without distracting what-ifs and how-abouts.&lt;br /&gt;2. Control freaks actually execute: no dreamy planning and little follow through for them.&lt;br /&gt;3. Control freaks don’t wait for things to happen to them (can’t control luck and coincidence). Instead, they take positive action to get the things they want.&lt;br /&gt;4. Focus, focus, focus.&lt;br /&gt;5. brain wave activity is a state of mind which is relaxed, but aware.&lt;br /&gt; At the alpha state the brainwaves run at about 8 to 12 cycles per seconds or hertz.&lt;br /&gt;The rest of our waking moments for the most part are in beta, the 'normal' state of 13-25 hertz.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;A very creative and even more relaxed state is the theta state which is even slower than alpha, and an even deeper sense of relaxation.  It is at the theta state that much creativity lies in our brains.  Theta brainwaves are typically of even greater amplitude and slower frequency. This frequency range is normally between 5 and 8 cycles a second. A person who has taken time off from a task and begins to daydream is often in a theta brainwave state.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;The Delta state is the brainwave activity we achieve during sleep.  Here the brainwaves are of the greatest amplitude and slowest frequency. They typically range between 1.5 to 4 cycles per second.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;The Alpha State is where we want to be as often as possible.  Jesie Len Gallagher, BSW, CH, CI  writes;&lt;br /&gt;However it is achieved, the therapeutic benefits are similar. When in the alpha state, one is lifted to a place inside where there is peace and order, where all is well and makes sense. When the human system is relaxed, the natural harmony in consciousness can take over, and the inner light can put things in place.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;William Dorich, writer of five books writes about Western over-stimulation and the need to disconnect from it……&lt;br /&gt;Our over analytical approach to realty and addiction to over stimulation makes it difficult for Western Civilization to get a grip on the concept of meditation, let alone practice it. The good news is that we are naturally predisposed to enter into an Alpha state every 90 minutes of the day. However, we grab a Starbucks instead of a siesta and press on. As one Beta wave compounds on top of another, it makes it increasingly difficult to disengage at the end of the day.   When our head finally does hit the pillow at night, we skip the Alpha phase and move directly into Theta or Delta. Since Alpha is where the rejuvenation process takes place, we may find ourselves waking up exhausted simply to start the entire process over again, consequently developing a chronic stress pattern that can lead to diminished vitality and depression.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;There are three ways to enter the alpha state:  MEDITATION, YOGA, AND RELAXATION.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Meditation— Meditation has been used for years to achieve the tranquil state of mind and to stay in it for longer durations of time. During meditation, you relax and calm the mind, and focus on your breathing and letting go of thoughts. Natural healing occurs during this deep relaxation.  It promotes regeneration, youthfulness, joy and expansion.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Yoga-- Yoga practitioners are aware of the connection between both mind and body.  The pranayama, or rhythmic breathing, allows for integration of the mind and body using the breath as the catalyst.   At the end of a session, a relaxed meditative state allows one to absorb the full benefit of the discipline as one prepares to re-enter the world of daily activities.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Practicing yoga can have a major impact on many aspects of your life. Practicing different poses can help improve flexibility, movement of joints, and add muscle tone. Yoga also has a profound effect on your mood. Yoga helps to decrease anxiety, depression, and worrying and it helps to increase concentration, memory, and well-being. Adding yoga to your life can help build your immune system and yoga can increase your energy.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Relaxation--- Relaxation brings health and well being to your body.  It allows for controlled thought, which produces more productive, clear, and calm decisions.     You feel more of a sense of peace, and feelings of wellness, which allows happiness and true contentment to abound in your life. Relaxation is a conduit for intuition, and you will be able to make decisions effortlessly. Relationships of all kinds will be easier to manage, and everything will flow more easily.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;You can attain the Alpha State every day by meditating on your chakras daily.&lt;br /&gt;There are seven chakras – each one associated with the primary colors.&lt;br /&gt;This is the chakra meditation I use daily.&lt;br /&gt;Chakras&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;1. The fundamentals of breath, bandhas (energy locks within the body), drishti (the focal point of the gaze), and vinyasa (sequential movement) are the basic foundations of the traditional Ashtanga Yoga system as taught by the late Sri Krishna Pattabhi Jois. I am happy to say I had the honor of studying with the guru in Colorado almost a decade ago. At that time, Sri Krishna Pattabhi Jois traveled and taught all over the world with his daughter and grandson. Jois would teach several hundred students at a time, who would turn up to workshops. Richard Freeman organized the Boulder, Colorado event that I attended.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;I recall meeting Sri Krishna Pattabhi Jois, and having pictures taken with him, his daughter and his grandson, Saraswathi Rangaswamy, Sharath respectively. Saraswathi Rangaswamy encouraged me to keep working on my lotus by commenting "It will come".&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Just as Lotus came, it also went. I recently sustained a sprained right knee from an accidental fall. It has been a few weeks, and the recovery is coming, but I am patiently waiting to resume my full practice. The lesson I learn from every injury is how to work around it, and that despite minor setbacks, that I can still practice Ashtanga yoga.&lt;br /&gt;The lesson for all want-to-be Ashtanga Yoga (power yoga) practioners is that regardless of your level, YOU CAN PRACTICE!&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Yoga for Inflexible People&lt;br /&gt;Yoga increases muscular strength, reduces tension and stress, has a low potential for injury, is non-competitive, has spiritual and psychological benefits, and a 5000 year track record. Yoga postures, or asanas, range from simple bending and twisting to contortionist types which are reserved for the most advanced practitioners.&lt;br /&gt;The yoga postures developed 5,000 years ago were not created for people who are already flexible, but rather to help inflexible people to become more flexible. A wide range of poses are taught and modified to help both beginning and intermediate students experience the benefits of yoga. No matter how flexible you are, a competent teacher can help you find a modified version of every posture that YOUR body can assume.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Guidelines of Practice for getting started at home or in the studio&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Anyone can develop a yoga practice. Those who posses a sincere desire to grow and learn and have the patience to persist are sure to be successful in the path of yoga. Yoga is especially recommended to those who are inflexible!&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;While yoga can be practiced any time of the day, Ashtanga Yoga practice is best undertaken in the early morning. This is a time when the environment is most free of worldly distraction. If this is not possible, then find a time that you may dedicate each day to the development of your practice. It is very helpful to practice at the same time each day, but if that is difficult for you, then just practice whenever you can.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Traditionally, Ashtanga yoga is practiced 6 days per week with one day taken as a rest day (usually Saturday). A minimum of 3 days per week is acceptable for beginners.&lt;br /&gt;Famous words from my guru ~ Yoga is 99% practice and 1% theory. ~ Sri Krishna Pattabhi Jois&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;The practice environment should be one that is pleasant, clean and free of distractions. I prefer to warm the room I practice in to about 90 degrees, but that would be too warm for others.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Clothing should allow for maximum movement and allow the skin to sweat. The feet will be bare. I prefer to wear a racerback cotton/lycra blend close fitting sports top with the same material pant.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;As a general rule, one should begin with an empty stomach and calm mind. Practice about 2-3 hours after a full meal and about 1 hour after light food. Additionally, resist the urge to drink water during the practice session, as this will cool the digestive fire generated during practice. Drink plenty of water following your practice session.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;It is recommended that you have your own yoga mat. Also, if you are particularly sweaty in your practice, a cotton rug or “skidless” is helpful. Props may be included. This would include for example, yoga bricks or belts may be used or even the wall.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Special notes for Yogis and Yoginis new to Yoga: You will notice an occasional soreness develop in the muscles from practice. It's important to keep with the practice. It is helpful to begin your practice slowly and patiently. Your body will "open" and become more flexible over time. I have been practicing yoga for many decades and teaching for over 10 years. I can assure you that regular practice has allowed me to attain an intermediate / advanced level with help from my teachers, the late Pattabhi Jois, Tim Miller, Trevor Monk, Bryan Kest, Veronica Zador, Sequoia Neptune, Baron Baptiste, to name a few.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;I would like to end this article with a few words of wisdom regarding the practice.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;"There is no need to be overwhelmed by the many dimensions of Ashtanga; just come in and take from it what you want." --Kathy McNames, co-owner of Yoga Vermont, Burlington's Ashtanga studio&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;"After asana &amp;amp; pranayama are perfect, pratyahara, sense control [the fifth limb of ashtanga yoga], follows. The first four limbs are external exercises: yama, niyama, asana, pranayama. The last four are internal, and they automatically follow when the first four are mastered. Pratyahara means that anywhere you look, you see God. Good mind control gives that capacity, so that when you look, everything you see is Atman (the God within). Then for you the world is colored by God. Whatever you see, you identify it with your Atman. For example, running primarily uses the hamstring and calf muscles. Many runners that experience injuries do so because they over-train. When you chose an alternate activity, you allow the primary muscles to heal and rebuild and other supporting muscles to get stronger. This is all done while still getting a good cardiovascular workout to strengthen your heart and lungs.&lt;br /&gt;Increase Performance &amp;amp; Power; Again, using running as an example, the hamstrings and calf muscles see most of the strain and are usually a runner’s strongest muscles. During races, many runners can lose steam because of sore quadriceps, or weak abs that make them hunch over when they tire; or arms that swing in an uncontrolled &amp;amp; fatigued state across their bodies. These other muscles can help pull a runner through in a race. They can help increase speed, endurance, and overall strength.&lt;br /&gt;Increased Motivation; Repetition can lead to boredom, making our workout routine stale. By adding in this element of change every so often, our alternate workouts can keep us fresh and focused on our goals.&lt;br /&gt;Added Flexibility &amp;amp; Stability; Even football linebackers credit their performance to the addition of martial arts, yoga, and dance!? The alternate activity you choose should be one that keeps up your cardiovascular conditioning, uses different primary muscles, yet is convenient and fun enough to keep your enthusiasm and excitement up.
